Tangier Island Va.

Tangier Island in Virginia was another part of our vacation with the grand girls.  First time they rode on a boat and were a little reserved about it at first but gained their sea legs after about thirty minutes.
We all enjoyed it and it was a nice breeze coming off the water on a very hot day.

We boarded the Steven Thomas in  Crisfield Maryland.

seated and ready to go.  this is their first boat trip and they are both a little leery but they adjusted pretty quick.

day couldn't be any prettier

Tangier Island in the middle of Chesapeake bay.   Captain John Smith first visited the island in 1608.
Settlers  from Cornwall England came in 1627.

crabbing is a way of life here.

It was a very hot day.  We were walking to get a golf cart to tour around a little bit.  Steve and I visited ourselves about 10 years ago, spent two nights here.  This day with the children was just a day trip and renting a golf cart for two hours is the way to go.
Kids wanted an ice cream cone.  steve said that the stuff would melt too fast while riding.  I didn't listen and wanted them to have one.   Well he does the worst thing and order three soft serve ice cream CHOCOLATE  cones and chocolate was everywhere.  The third one was for him.
We wore ice cream all over the island.  Wow, was it hot.

Traveling through neighborhood on island

Some newer homes I see here.

One lady in a shop was telling me her Mom bought two homes here, one for herself and the other for her daughter.  She was from Florida.
I must say I wouldn't mind having one here.

fishermans corner restaurant.

Moving along with Genevieve driving while  sitting in the middle of me and Opa.  Adalyn behind.

Nice yards

Graves are plenty on Tangier and the church yard is looking full.

Families have their loved ones buried in their yards.

I understand this place caught on fire some years back

Bayview inn   Steve and I stayed here some years back

Cute little gift shops on the island

some had for sale items on their fence in yards

view from the little bridge
we had lunch at lorraines. delicious food.

back to the boat to head back to Crisfield Md.

girls on the way back pretending they were  in charge

rainy as as we were leaving
We will be going back

heading inside to get out of the rain that is starting and to have a seat while we are underway

Lights were nice as it got darker on the way back

Clip of the day

The accent spoken by the locals is unique to the island

Dearest Betsy,
Are people actually living on Tangier Island or is it only kind of set up for the summer season for tourists to have food and gifts?
That must have been a very special experience for sailing out with the grand girls, for their very first experience!
Hugs,
Mariette

People live year round on the island. Very good restaurants on the island. little gift shops. Small grocery store. You can hear in some the slight Elizabethan accent. Very friendly and we will return and this time from Reedville Virginia and stay a few nights. We like walking the beach there also.
