Meems bottom covered bridge in Shenandoah county, Virginia..
Sits across the North Fork of the Shenandoah River.
Current bridge is the forth one built.
The first one built between 1867 and 68 was destroyed by flood in 1870.
Replaced in 1871 only to be taken out again by flood waters in 1877
Third one constructed in 1878 , replaced 1894
The bridge named after the Meem family who owned large tracts of land in the area. Rock gathered from local quarries were used to build the abutments which extend below the river bed 10 feet.
October 1976 - vandals set fire and destroyed the bridge. Timbers original to bridge were salvaged. By 1979 the bridge was rebuilt and put back in service.

So nice to visit your blog and see something I wouldn't be able to. It was a joy to explore the bridge and surrounding area with you.
How neat... I love covered bridges... We have one not too far from us (near Gatlinburg, TN) which we like to visit on occasion...One year we planned a Covered-Bridge tour of New England --but a big hurricane came through that area with lots of flooding and washed out several of the historical bridges... We never got there ---but maybe someday we will...

What a beautiful covered bridge Betsy! I have always loved those. We only have a couple here in Missouri, one being only an hour away from here. Your post makes me want to go see it again! It is not as grand as the one you showed us though. :) Have a great week!
I just love old bridges like that and that one is a beauty! Sadly we don't have them in this part of the country as far as I know, so it's nice to see one again here in Blogland :)

What a fate after all the flooding, the work had to be done over and over again...
Worst was it being vandalized by fire! Some people have absolutely no respect for things and people as it did affect many; also the tax payers.

Betsy, this is a wonderful bridge. Thank you for sharing it, the video was fantastic, too. We have a few very small covered bridges here in Wisconsin, but for the most part, I think they are fairly new. The bridge in your post has been through so many tragedies, nature and vandals, but is still standing. That's amazing! Always a pleasure to visit. :-)
