Gardens in Chase (pt. one)

MacCallum More gardens and museum began in 1929. Five acres of herb, wildflower and rose garden with imported statues.   The Museum
was not open the day we visited because of being closed on Mondays, but we did get to take in the gardens.
The gardens were by Lucy Morton Hudgins, wife of Edward Wrenn Hudgins - The Virginia Supreme Court of appeals former Chief Justice.      These amazing gardens are a sight to behold.   A stately stone wall fence with a iron gate to the entrance.
Located in the historic neighborhood in Chase City Va. in Mecklenburg County.
MacCallum  More is Scottish for "Home of the Clan".  Named by Mrs. Hudgins,  the home is two story colonial.

Garden is surrounded by stone  taken from the  surrounding countryside of old foundations and chimneys from18th and 19th century

Interesting tree root,  looks like an alligator to me.

Commander William Henry Hudgins expanded the garden in the 1940's , 60's and 70's.  There are areas of the gardens that are dedicated to the Hudgins and Morton families.

Ivy and vinca covered areas.   Virginia landscape architect - Charles Gillette, consulted on design for the gardens.

Imported from Europe and the Far East are many structures, fountains , statues and artifacts in the gardens and adornment for the walls.
