Immanual Episcopal Church - The Diocese of Virginia

Gothic Revival architecture constructed in 1853 , thanks to the efforts of George Washington Bassett, grandnephew of Martha Custis Washington.
Origins in the old church area date back to early 18th century,  at that time a frame structure was shared with other congregations in the area.   (link at bottom of post where I found some info.)

Located in Historic Old Church a few minutes from Mechanicsville Va.

During the two decades prior to the civil war - representing the revitalization of the Episcopal church in Virginia  and the United States.

Served as a field hospital and army headquarters during the Civil War.

Rector of the Church from 1881 to 1904 was Sewell Hepburn, Katherine Hepburn's grandfather.

The door painted red as spoke about in previous posts

  2. Beautiful church! I particularly like the image toward the end that has the trees reflecting in the windows above the red door. Definitely a lot of history with this church!
