Agecroft Hall garden visit

Agecroft Hall  originally built in Lancashire England in late 15th century.
The Langley and Dauntesey families of England for hundreds of years called it home.

In disrepair at the end of the 19th century - Agecroft was sold at auction in 1925.
Richmonder Thomas C. Williams Jr. purchased it, had it dismantled and shipped across the Atlantic in crates to be assembled in a Richmond neighborhood on the banks of the James River.  Reminiscent of it's original site in Lancashire on the Irwell river.

James River seen from the rear of Agecroft Hall.  I zoomed in on the river here so it makes the river look closer than it really is.

A short clip of the entrance to Agecroft.
This clip is a little shaky when expanding it to watch. Don't know why.

Entrance to gardens this evening

Beautiful Sunken Garden.  Gardens are designed by landscape architect Charles Gillette.  As stated in the brochure - a stroll through these gardens feels like a stroll back in time.  This sunken garden is based on the pond garden at England's Hampton Court Palace.

some close ups of a few of the flowers on bloom this evening.

One of so many blooming Magnolia trees.  The grounds were scented with these flowers in bloom.

This is one of my favorite zinnias in bloom

    1. Sometimes Judy I think I was born in the wrong time period. I would love to walk those grounds in 1800 clothing. Yes, we would feel at home.. Ahhh - to dream.. I do a lot of that.

  3. Oh Betsy, I'm embarrassed to say I've never been to Agecroft Hall! I've been to Lancashire England and I grew up in Richmond, but have never visited here. We must put this on our list of places to visit this year! The garden is amazing! Thanks for sharing this beauty. ♥

  4. Not many people can say they have traveled to Lancashire England. I think that is so great. Maybe some pictures you have to post and did you get a picture of the Irwell river? Would love to see.
Do try to go to Agecroft. Try to go and take the house tour. Christmas is so much fun to visit also. We try to get there at Christmas.
You will love the garden, especially now. So much beauty here. The magnolias are just amazing.
    Thank you for visiting.

  7. Dearest Betsy,
Wow, this gentleman from the tobacco industry did a remarkable thing for bringing this late 14th Century Manor (built around 1393) from England all the way to Virginia and rebuilding it. Let's hope he did live to see the end results but I doubt it as he himself died on February 14, 1929 at the age of 64... Sad!
What a vision this man had and also for the location.
Wonderful time of the year for visiting when the magnolias bloom!
    Hugs,
    Mariette
