My sister and her husband came for a visit and we rode to Bath County. Had a lunch at a little restaurant which was nice. Things are opening as they should be.
Gorgeous view over the mountains at Dan Ingalls over look
Little hard to read the marker here but here is a link →to historical markers
We took the little day trip with my sister and brother in law
On our way and a stop as we looped around to get back home. I like how it's not overly populated here and people are friendly, no rudeness. I wish I could talk my husband into having a place here.
Jefferson Pools are just about ready to collapse, sad to say.
Pretty little church in the area.
Brother in law, husband and sister
Omni Homestead not open but getting ready it looks to be. We are talking about staying a few nights here. Pretty area.
spending a few nights here after opening is on our to do list.
I need some geraniums. The red ones here are just so deep red.
A peek into the windows. I love the urns sitting on that fireplace.
re opening on June 29th.

Dearest Betsy,
We all are longing for things to be accessible once again. What a time... half of this year is gone within a day.
You sure had a wonderful day trip with your sister and brother-in-law! Glad you managed without being rained upon you.
Guess your husband is right for not wanting to move there... Think about our age; we all are NOT getting younger and the biggest mistake often being made is to fall in love with a location in the prettiest time of the year. Go back there on a cold winter day and then think deeply about it...
Well, last Sunday by 6:00 PM I did upload my final chapter, the largest one. We already proofed the two received batches of Pdfs with each 4 chapters and on Tuesday we will receive the final one. Once again peering over the text and adding sticky notes to some errors or where a change needs to be done. So looking forward to putting this behind me and back to full freedom. Let's hope that time will be coming for ALL of us.
At least we will be able to ride our bike again, before peering over the final chapters. Pieter did not bike since May 22nd and I did not bike since May 15... How time flies by!
Hugs,
Mariette
Looks like a great place for a visit and indeed to stay awhile and soak it all in.
What a wonderful time!
Hi there and Happy Sunday Mariette,
My husband would like a little get away there but it is as you say not a place thay has shopping close or doctor offices.
I see what you mean by visiting on a cold winter day. I do love a lot of snow and if the fire place had plenty of wood, I think I could handle it. Well, maybe. My mom said that she did not like Mecklenburg County when she was young. She said she would never live in the mountains again. She didn't either once she got away from home.
My heavens you are a busy lady for sure and wondering if this is something that will be for sale? I am interested.
Time is coming soon to be out and riding bikes again. You are so right. This year is just about half over!!
Hugs - Betsy
Dearest Betsy,
When we were looking for a place to rent/buy or build in Italy, we also came on top of a mountain (not too high) and chicken were roaming free, an older widow was trying to sell it. Dirt road with narrow trails that I pictured all muddy in winter or when it rains for weeks... and what if you forgot something from the store? What if you're sick? And on and on. When we bought the lot, nobody did tell, us Americans, that it was an earthquake region with all its building restrictions. So it turned out way too expensive for building that much in the ground, pillars etc. We sold it and left after one year.
The book will be for sale but mainly for the mushrooms industry as it is a scientific book and also a handbook as my Pieter always had the rare gift of translating science with all its backgrounds into clear and understandable language for others to learn from. Above all, to understand why they are doing something and also what not to do. I aimed for preserving his intellect this way and letting him see the fruits of his labor. His book is already in 8 official languages and this will just be a final, better update and only in English. Did write it in Oxford English, what we both studied and what is used the world over as that part is far bigger than the American English. Quite a challenge but we're down to the final batch of Proofs, getting them on Tuesday.
We did ride our bikes this morning but boy did I have a hard time, first of all it was already 93+F and so humid, now it cooled down a bit after a thunderstorm. I sure could tell that I was NOT in condition after all my office work and typing, typing, reading out loud and Pieter checking off the original writing, then again reading out loud from the Proof Pdf and Pieter my previous version of Word document, done in the special template that our graphic designer prepared for me according to the character of the book, the Figures and the Tables used. Had to create a proof chapter, a real one but for her to assess what I would need. Never done anything like this but I'm learning fast and I did it. By far not easy with so many characters and difficult scientific names!
That's behind me now. Still the front matter of the book needs to be done, again once more listing all the difficult names per page. But that too I will get done.
My Pieter has been a kind of pioneer in the mushroom industry and there is no book like his, called the Mushroom Bible. So that's my aim... Getting the hardcover, paperback and eBook format for POD = Print On Demand from anywhere in the world. The most difficult way as Amazon or Apple offers easier ways but then you are at their mercy too. Now I got my own ISBNs and all rights. The shipping with POD is a lot cheaper too. That makes all the difference for certain parts of the world.
I did a lot of research on all this, how to go about... And then finding me a graphic designer for our needs. She'd done academic publications so she was the right person and I'm very pleased with her professionalism! Certain tables I could not produce, could not break my old mind on everything so I'd rather pay her to do it.
Most I've tackled my self, all the typing at least and lots of the 30 Tables too.
Enjoy summer and stay where you are at your lovely home and garden!
Mariette
