Wednesday stuff

Wow, been a while, been busy.  Hope to finish up planting a few things  today and that will be it.  The weather the past few weeks has either been cold or hot.  Looks like now it will stay pretty warm to finish planting.   I have my water jugs lined up in the backyard to be filled by husband to give a water to potted plants in the morning.  I know when they are filled when he turns them in the opposite direction.  😃

Children coming to do their school work.  Some tree men coming to give estimate on taking out and trimming more trees.  One drawback about moving to an older neighborhood like we did 14 years ago is that previous owners planted trees that should be in the forest.  They get huge over time and need to be taken out.
Not enough sunlight to get to the yard.

These two hollyhocks, picture taken last year  have grown so much.  Looking forward to blooms this year as the first year it's just leaves.

I made a big mistake and planted under the dogwood that needs some trimming just to have a place quick to put it and now wished I hadn't.  It is a monster.  Supposed to be a black color.  Will see when it blooms how they will look.  I sprayed with neem oil for fungus on the leaves, but that really doesn't bother me as I pull off the really bad ones and put in trash to keep away from any other leaves. Since pulling them out, the plant looks better and healthier
The one in pot below which is a pastel color pink I believe will be put in ground after the blooms are finished this year.  Lined up at garage with tomato, pepper and a squash plant that I grew from seeds.  One pot is a Dahlia next to hollyhock.

The Parisian Gherkin has the prettiest yellow flowers.
So far so good with the bells of Ireland and Cosmos from seed

Weeding to be done again, and again here

My tea rose which has traveled with me from two homes.

putting together hanging pots with some plants I purchased from local nursery

The bottom broke off of one these pots so I gorilla glued them together.

Back out to plant.

Happy Wednesday to all

  1. Dearest Betsy,
Yes, big trees do grow over time. You are so right and in 14 years that is a lot less light by those giants.
You got healthy hollyhocks. We can't keep them at our hotter climate; love them though.
Our tree cutter would have come to finish the job of cutting 3 giants and more limbs taken off other giants. But he had to travel to Indiana for the funeral of his 4-year old grandson who died of an untreatable brain tumor... Very sad!
    Hugs,
    Mariette

    1. Oh Mariette how horrible for this Grandfather. I can just imagine how the parents are right now. Four years old, terrible. My son died when he was just about four months old and that was devastating. I can't imagine having a child for four years and it happening this way. So worry to hear. Hugs, Betsy.

    2. Yes Betsy, indeed a tragedy for the family. So sorry to learn about your son whom you had to lose after four months... Our only solace is that our souls never die and in that regard, loved ones are still near us; special Angels we know by name. Big hugs,
      Mariette

  2. Your flowers are so pretty!! I know what you mean about trees. We were teenagers when we purchased our house which was only 5 years old. The previous owner had planted some trees and bushes directly against the foundation so we did pull those out first. We did not know enough about trees he had planted on the rest of the property and what we should have done. The prettiest flowering tree is behind our garage where only a neighbor can see it. We had to have four trees taken out (on our property of course) between her house and ours, as well as the biggest tree in our play yard. Luckily we found a tree company looking for work at the beginning of a season who gave us a great price on all five for cash payment.

    1. Hi Miss Merry, I do not like anything close to the foundation either. Good you removed the growth. I have box wood at the front but they are two feet from foundation. The gentleman who sprays for ants and mosquitoes here said to get the mulch away from the house because it could cause termites. I got that stuff away. I have it around the bushes but no where near the house foundation.
My heavens, removing five trees cost a small fortune. Having limbs cut cost a lot. Good you found someone looking for work and gave you a decent price. Having the stumps ground is not cheap either, but I guess neither is the equipment they use to get the job done. Man in our neighborhood had about 15 trees removed on the home he just purchased. Oaks and pines.

  3. Your garden is off to a great start! Love the idea of turning the water pots around so you know they are filled!
